Intent

At Latymer All Saints we know that knowledge and understanding of technology is of increasing importance for children’s future both at home and for employment. Therefore, we aim to prepare our learners for their future by providing them with a modern, ambitious and relevant education in computing. We want to equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity that will enable them to become active participants in the digital world.  It is important that children have opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills they need to use technology safely and creatively in an ever changing and developing digital world.

Our curriculum meets the interests of all learners, sequenced with a range of creative learning experiences and challenges based on the essential requirements of the computing programme of study. We ensure learning is embedded and children can build on their understanding, as each new concept and skill is taught with opportunities for children to revisit skills and knowledge as they progress through the school.

We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology who can:

  • Understand and apply the essential principles and concepts of Computer Science, including logic, algorithms and data representation
  • Analyse problems in computational term, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems;
  • Evaluate and apply information technology analytically to solve problems;
  • Communicate ideas well by utilising appliances and devices throughout all areas of the curriculum.

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

 

Implementation

As a school, we have chosen the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work from Reception to Year 6. The scheme of work supports our teachers in delivering fun and engaging lessons which help to raise standards and allow all pupils to achieve to their full potential. We are confident that the scheme of work more than adequately meets the national vision for Computing. It provides immense flexibility, strong cross-curricular links and integrates perfectly with the 2Simple Computing Assessment Tool.

Learning is embedded across the curriculum, with opportunities to embed their computing skills and knowledge as part of a cross-curricular approach. Much of the subject-specific knowledge developed in our computing lessons equip pupils with experiences which will benefit them in secondary school, further education and future workplaces. From research methods, use of presentation and creative tools and logical thinking, computing at Latymer All Saints Primary School gives children the building blocks that enable them to pursue a wide range of interests and vocations in the next stage of their lives from KS1 –KS2.

Impact

When our pupils leave Latymer All Saints, they, no matter their starting points, should:

· apply the principles of information and computation and how digital systems work. They begin to learn the skill of programming, creating programs, systems and a range of content.

· explain, justify and apply their thinking, with a sound understanding of computing vocabulary, so that they become computer literate

· create a set of instructions for a computer to follow (algorithm) to complete tasks, create apps and computer programs

· understand how hardware and software talk to each other and develop problem-solving skills to enable creating algorithms and programs.

· have an enjoyment and curiosity of the subject and build confidence in their understanding and application of computing skills so that they are in a strong position to access the secondary school curriculum

· understand the real world application of computing, its link to other subjects, and gain the computing skills required to navigate our world.
